Created in 1926 by Marcel Dumas,
Certified Living Heritage Company,
Listed in the Métiers d’Art Rare inventory in 2011,
The Tannerie Parcheminerie Dumas, one of the last three in France,
is still a family-run business, managed by Frédéric Dumas. Specialized in lighting fixtures and orthopedics when it was founded, and the sole supplier of parchment for the drums of the Garde Républicaine in the 60s, in recent years it has developed parchment production for arts and crafts such as calligraphy, illumination, bookbinding and sheathing.
At the museum, you can learn about the history of parchment and the parchment-making trade, perfect your knowledge of leather working, and admire the last hide dryer in Annonay, a town renowned for its tanning expertise since medieval times. You’ll get to know the Dumas parchment tannery through its history, the diversity of the trades involved and the varied uses of the finished product. You can also watch parchment being made in the glass gallery overlooking the still-working parchment factory.
Site accessible to people with motor disabilities. Recommended by le Petit Futé, le Routard, GéoGuide, le Guide vert, Lonely planet.
